Reading

This past summer I renewed my long time love of reading. Through high school and early college, I really didn't make the time to read much with the exception of the Harry Potter series, but even that I did not complete in those years. I had been making excuses that I didn't have time with school and work and life, but I realized this summer that if I keep making excuses I will never make time to read. When it's not college, it will be that I am married, or work, or babies, or a multitude of other things. Reading is something that I liked to do for me, and even through my hectic life, I needed to make time for me. When summer started I read a couple of good chick flick books that I had been wanting to read and thoroughly enjoyed them. So, right after the most recent Harry Potter movie came out, I decided that I would restart the series and read it to the end (a task that I had set out to do about 4 times in the past, thus the reason I have the first two books pretty much committed to memory). I finished the series this Fall and I decided to keep on going with my new hobby. Here is a list of the books I read in 2009!
  • Multiple Blessings
  • The Devil in The Junior League
  • The Nanny Diaries
  • Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone
  • Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (my personal favorite of the series)
  • Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows
  • Julie & Julia
  • Peter Pan

12 books in a year, half a year actually. I would have to say that is not bad. So, the reason I am going on about all of this is because I am trying to keep a log of the books I have read and get suggestions of books I should read. In 2010, I want to read a lot more. Not to mention, Thomas bought me that pricey Kindle and I want to put it to good use! I have a small list of books that I am planning to read, and I have decided this year I want to read more of the Classics. I am sorely lacking in those! So here is what I have read/plan to read in 2010.

  • Twilight (already finished)
  • New Moon (currently reading)
  • Eclipse
  • Breaking Dawn
  • Emma
  • Pride & Prejudice
  • Possibly more of the Jane Austen books, but I may get tired of romance after two of them, so I am leaving myself open to different books.

So, what books have you read this past year that were good? What suggestions do you have for me? What is your favorite Classic that you have read?

  1. Look for three by Harry Bernstein. They are called "The Invisible Wall," "The Dream," and "The Golden Willow." He is 99 years old and lives in New Jersey and wrote the first one after his wife of 67 years passed away. The first is his growing up in England during WW1, the second is about his family moving to the U.S., and the third is his love story with his wife. They are so amazing, I had tears in my eyes!

  2. My favorite book of all time is Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Such a great book. I also like Wurthering Heights. Anything Jane Austen is good. I like The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Anohther super good book that's historical fiction is The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette. And Philippa Gregory is good historical fiction as well. She wrote The Other Boleyn Girl. I love books! Memoirs of a Geisha was good too. Okay, I'll stop there.

  4. I'm a total foodie so I love anything Michael Pollan. I also really liked 'Sushi in Dixieland', 'Bel Canto', and if you're into the political stuff it doesn't get better than John Grisham!

  5. Hi there! I just came across your blog and really enjoy reading it. I too have a log of books I have read. I read a lot and have about 100 books or so on my list from the last couple of years. It really helps remind you what books you have already read. Anyway, a couple of months ago I ready Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella. It's about a girl who's Great Aunt shows up as a flapper ghost and needs her help finding a necklace so she can pass through to the after life. Although it's not a classic, it was something I couldn't put down.
